Entry requirements
Jordan entry requirements for U.S. citizens
What U.S. tourists need to visit Jordan: the visa on arrival, the Allenby Bridge exception, the Jordan Pass, the government fee and how long you can stay, with sources.
What you need to enter Jordan
For a tourist trip, the answer is: Visa available on arrival1. U.S. citizens need a visa, and it is issued for a fee when you arrive at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman and at most border crossings.
According to the U.S. Department of State, Jordan's Ministry of Interior also offers an online visa application: under review — see the official source5.
Entry rules change often, and the Jordanian government decides who may enter. Check the official sources before you travel.
Entering by the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge
Visas are not issued on arrival at the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge crossing, so a visa or special permit is needed beforehand to enter there.6If you plan to cross there, check the official sources well before your trip.
How long you can stay
A visa issued on arrival normally allows a stay of 30 days3. To stay longer, you must register at a police station before that time ends.
Visitors who stay beyond their permitted time without registering pay 3 JOD per extra day, usually collected when leaving.7The Jordan Pass and the visa fee
The government's Jordan Pass waives the 40 JOD visa fee if it is bought before arrival and the visitor stays at least 2 consecutive nights.8The conditions can change, and the Jordanian government decides how they apply. Read the official terms before you buy.
Passport rules
Entry to Jordan requires a passport valid for at least six months.9If your passport is close to that limit, renew it before you go: see Renew your U.S. passport by mail.
Short on time? If you travel internationally soon, you can book an appointment at a passport agency or center once you are within 14 calendar days of your trip, or 28 days if you also need a foreign visa.10 Read Urgent travel: getting a passport fast.
Travel advisory
The U.S. Department of State rates Jordan at Level 3: Reconsider Travel4. Read the full advisory before you decide to travel, and check it again before you leave; it can change at any time.

- At Queen Alia International Airport or another crossing that issues visas, get your visa and pay the government fee, unless the Jordan Pass covers it.
