What you need to enter Indonesia

For a tourist trip, the answer is: Visa available on arrival1. You can get it when you arrive, or request it online before the trip on the official site of Indonesia's immigration authority, evisa.imigrasi.go.id4.

To get the visa on arrival, travelers need a return or onward flight booking with a departure date.5

Entry rules change often, and the Indonesian government decides who may enter. Check the official site before you travel.

The online arrival card

Every traveler must submit an online arrival card within the 3 days before arriving in Indonesia.6

The arrival card is separate from the visa: you need both. Fill it in only through official Indonesian government channels.

How long you can stay

The visa on arrival allows a stay of 30 days3, counted from your arrival date. If you want to stay longer, check the official site before your permitted stay ends.

Staying past the permitted period carries a fine of IDR 1,000,000 per day and may lead to detention, deportation or a future entry ban.7

Passport rules

The passport must be valid for at least six months after the date of arrival in Indonesia.8 The passport must have at least two blank pages to enter Indonesia.9

Check your expiration date and count your blank pages now. If your passport falls short, renew it before you go: see Renew your U.S. passport by mail.

Short on time? If you travel internationally soon, you can book an appointment at a passport agency or center once you are within 14 calendar days of your trip, or 28 days if you also need a foreign visa.10 Read Urgent travel: getting a passport fast.

The U.S. Department of State rates Indonesia at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution11. Advisories can change at any time, so read the current one before you book and again before you leave.
