Entry requirements
Ghana entry requirements for U.S. citizens
What U.S. tourists need to visit Ghana: the e-Visa, how to apply, the government fee, yellow fever proof, how long you can stay and passport rules, with sources.
What you need to enter Ghana
For a tourist trip, the answer is: Electronic visa (e-Visa) required1. You request it online before you travel, on the official portal run by the Ghana Immigration Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: evisa.immigration.gov.gh4.
Ghana issues single-entry e-Visas that must be used to enter within 90 days of the issue date.5 A tourist e-Visa application requires a confirmed return or onward travel ticket.6The portal lists every document the application asks for. Read it before you start.
Entry rules change often, and the Ghanaian government decides who may enter. Check the official portal before you travel.
How long you can stay
The immigration officer sets your length of stay when you arrive, up to a maximum of 60 days3. Leave by the date you are given.
Yellow fever vaccination
Anyone older than nine months must show proof of yellow fever vaccination on arrival in Ghana.7Get vaccinated in time and carry your vaccination card with your passport.
Passport rules
For the e-Visa, the passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the planned departure date from Ghana.8 For the e-Visa, the passport must have at least 3 blank pages.9Check your expiration date and count your blank pages now. If your passport falls short, renew it before you apply: see Renew your U.S. passport by mail.
Short on time? If you travel internationally soon, you can book an appointment at a passport agency or center once you are within 14 calendar days of your trip, or 28 days if you also need a foreign visa.10 Read Urgent travel: getting a passport fast.
