Entry requirements
Tanzania entry requirements for U.S. citizens
What a U.S. tourist needs to enter Tanzania: the visa, the official site, the government fee, how long each visit can last, passport rules and yellow fever proof.
What you need to enter Tanzania
Entry document for a tourist trip: Electronic visa (e-Visa) required1. You can apply online on the official site, www.immigration.go.tz2.
Visitors must show a round-trip ticket and be ready to prove they have enough money for their stay.6How long you can stay
With Tanzania's multiple-entry visa, each visit can last up to 90 days4. Plan your dates within that limit.
Passport rules for Tanzania
Your passport must have at least six months of validity to enter Tanzania.5 At least one blank passport page is required to enter Tanzania.7If your passport does not meet these rules, renew it before you apply for the visa. Routine processing takes 4–6 weeks8, plus mailing time: see Renew your U.S. passport by mail. If you travel internationally soon, you can book an appointment at a passport agency or center once you are within 14 calendar days of your trip, or 28 days if you also need a foreign visa.9 Read Urgent travel: getting a passport fast.
Yellow fever proof
Travelers arriving from countries where yellow fever is endemic, including after an airport transit of 12 hours or more, must show proof of yellow fever vaccination.10Check whether this applies to your route, connections included. If it does, talk to a doctor or a travel clinic early and carry the proof with your passport.
Volunteering is not tourism
Volunteer work is not allowed on a tourist visa; volunteers need a Class C residence permit.11 For volunteer or work plans, check the official source or ask an immigration attorney.
Travel advisory
The U.S. Department of State currently rates Tanzania at Level 3: Reconsider Travel12. Advisory levels can change at any time. Read the current advisory before you book and again before you leave.
