Entry requirements
Cambodia entry requirements for U.S. citizens
What a U.S. tourist needs to enter Cambodia: the visa on arrival or online, the Embassy fee, how long you can stay and passport rules, with official sources.
What you need to enter Cambodia
U.S. citizens need a Cambodian visa, but tourists do not have to get it before they fly. The rule for tourists is: Visa available on arrival1. A visa on arrival is issued at the Phnom Penh and Siem Reap airports and at major border crossings.
Rules change, and the Cambodian government decides who can enter. Check the official site before you travel.
How to get your visa
You have three ways to get a tourist visa:
- On arrival, at the Phnom Penh and Siem Reap airports and at major border crossings.
- Online, in advance, on Cambodia's official e-visa website, www.evisa.gov.kh2. Type the address yourself instead of clicking ads or links on other sites.
- From the Embassy of Cambodia in Washington, which issues a tourist (Type-T) visa in your passport.
How long you can stay
A tourist visa allows a stay of up to 30 days4 after you enter. Count the days from your entry date.
Rules change, and Cambodia's government decides how long you can stay. Check the official site before you travel.
Passport rules
The passport must be valid for at least six months after the date of entry into Cambodia.6 For a visa issued by the Embassy, the passport needs one blank visa page for the visa sticker.7Rules change and the destination government decides, so confirm these on the official site before you travel. If your passport will not meet these rules, renew it before you go. Renewing by mail takes 4–6 weeks8 plus mailing time: see Renew your passport by mail. When you renew, you can ask for the larger book with more visa pages. Extra cost: no fee9.
Short on time? If you travel internationally soon, you can book an appointment at a passport agency or center once you are within 14 calendar days of your trip, or 28 days if you also need a foreign visa.10 Read Urgent travel: getting a passport fast.
Travel advisory
The U.S. Department of State's travel advisory for Cambodia is Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution5. The level can change at any time. Read the full advisory before you book and again before you go; the link is under "Sources and verification" at the end of this guide.
Other rules to know
- At the airport: Immigration officers at Cambodian airports take electronic fingerprints from arriving travelers.11
- Staying too long: Staying beyond the authorized date usually brings a fine of USD 10 per day; long overstays can lead to arrest, detention and deportation.12
Step by step
- Check that your passport meets the validity and blank page rules above.
- Choose how you will get the visa: on arrival, online in advance, or from the Embassy in Washington.
- If you apply online, use only the official e-visa website and keep the approved e-visa with your travel documents.
- If you apply through the Embassy, follow its instructions and pay its fee.
- If you get the visa on arrival, enter through the Phnom Penh or Siem Reap airport or a major border crossing.
- If you arrive by air, expect immigration officers to take your fingerprints.
- Leave Cambodia before your authorized stay ends.
